When is the best time to trade crypto in India?

Synopsis

Crypto markets operate 24/7, offering Indian traders opportunities beyond traditional market hours. According to CoinDCX co-founder Sumit Gupta, the Europe-US trading overlap between 6:30 PM and 10:30 PM IST is often the most active period, with higher liquidity, tighter spreads, and stronger institutional participation driving price action.

The crypto market never sleeps. But you still need to know when to show up.

Indian equity traders know the drill. Markets open at 9:15, close at 3:30, and then the day is done. You close your terminal, maybe check the closing prices one more time, and wait for tomorrow.

Crypto does not work that way.

For decades, if you wanted exposure to a global asset class with serious institutional participation and round-the-clock price action, you needed access to international brokers, foreign accounts, and regulatory workarounds most retail traders simply could not manage. Today, you just need a phone and an account on a crypto exchange.

Did you Know?

The world of cryptocurrencies is very dynamic. Prices can go up or down in a matter of seconds. Thus, having reliable answers to such questions is crucial for investors.

View Details »The window that opens after Indian equity markets close at 3:30 PM is not downtime anymore. It is prime time.

The Evening Overlap Is Where the Action Is

Between 6:30 PM and 10:30 PM IST, European and US trading sessions are running simultaneously. Institutional desks are active. Volumes in Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, and most major pairs are at their highest. Spreads tighten. Price discovery is more reliable. For anyone trading after a full day of watching Nifty and Sensex, this window lands at exactly the right time.

Live Events

You are not fighting thin liquidity or second-guessing whether a move is real. When the Europe-US overlap is live, the market tends to tell you something.

This window can stretch toward 1 AM IST on days when US macroeconomic data drops, ETF flow numbers come in, or something significant moves sentiment globally. Those are the sessions worth staying up for.

The Other Sessions Are Worth Understanding Too

The US session runs until roughly 3:30 AM IST and remains important for anyone tracking derivatives positioning or macro-driven moves. The Asia session, from early morning through early afternoon IST, tends to be quieter but occasionally produces sharp moves, especially in tokens with strong Asian retail interest.

Weekend sessions are a different beast altogether. Liquidity thins out considerably, which means prices can move fast in either direction on relatively small volume. That is not necessarily a reason to stay away, but it is a reason to be more careful with position sizing.

Why This Matters More Than People Realise

Indian traders now have access to a global asset class that trades when they are free, responds to global macro events in real time, and does not pause for market holidays or settlement cycles. That combination simply did not exist for most retail participants even five years ago.

The best traders I have seen treat the post-3:30 PM window the way a second shift treats its opening bell. The Indian market gave you your first half. The global crypto market gives you the second.

      Show up prepared for both.
